Month: March 2020
A message from Ms MacDonald
Be Safe with Electricity!
The children made a great job of our writing job on Wednesday. We made posters!
Healthy Hands
We have been investigating why it is important to wash our hand well with soap!
The children noticed that the pepper sprung back from the soapy fingers! Great experimenting everyone.
Learning about Google Classroom
Thank goodness for Mr Stewart and P7 who came along to visit us today and show us how to log into Google Classroom. It was lovely to get little messages from the children. It’s all change but we all love learning in Primary 1.
Library Visit Cancelled
Just to let you all know our rescheduled Library visit for next week (Monday 23rd March) has been cancelled. Many thanks to the lovely parents who were going to come along and accompany us. Next time 🙂
Big Learning 16.03.20
Phonics

This week we are learning to the sound’ck’. Encourage your child to say only one sound – not ‘c’ and ‘k’. We found lots of words that had the sound’ck’ and we used our knowledge of rime to help us. We made lists of words that ended with – ack, eck, ick, ock, uck.
Have fun at home! Can you think of any words that we did not find today?
Have a go of these games.
Reading

This week to help us understand what we read, we are learning to make a picture in our head as we read or listen to the words of a text, story or poem. We are learning that the picture must match closely to the words we read.
Handwriting
When you practise at home – say it out loud to aid pencil control.
Your pencil needs to follow the words and directions you say our loud .
Writing

This week we are writing a story based on ‘The Dream’. We are going to work hard on ‘Who’ is in the story and ‘What’ happens.
We are learning to
- put a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence
- use a full stop to show the end of a sentence
- use finger spaces between words
- use our bronze/silver spelling words in our writing
Numeracy
We are learning to solve subtraction problems using materials or counting back.
We are learning place value of numbers.
Subtraction Train – click on the take away wagon to practise
Minus Mission – shoot down the correct spaceship
Flash Interactive – place value – how may dots can you see?
Always have fun!
When I grow up!
To round off the week we had a chat about what jobs the children would like to do when they grow up?
So many amazing talents out there-we love it!
A super DYW week last week!

The lady who looks after the goats was very sad as the bridge for the goats had been washed away in the flooding! She could not see the goats so we decided that we would build a new bridge for her to let her visit the goats.
We had lots of ideas about the types of jobs that would need to be done to build a bridge and came up with these:
- designer/engineer
- builder
- truck/lorry driver
- safety officer
- decorator
- scuba diver
Making circuits
Today we continued our learning about electricity with the help of some S3 students from Millburn Academy. We learned how to make a simple circuit and how to make the bulb light up. Then we learned about the symbols we use for bulbs, wires and batteries, and used them to draw our own circuits.
Thank you so much Mr Crawshaw and Millburn S3s!
